My best hyperspectral trichrome photos from Costa Rica (2024).

My favorite shot: Aurora Waves on Rocky Shore.

Last fall, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. I stayed with my brother, father, and his S/O in a quaint little resort by the ocean. While on the trip, I decided to shoot quite a bit of hyper-spectral trichrome photography, taking advantage of the abundant flora and easy access to the sea. These are the best results of the photos I took on that trip.

I shot these with my custom trichromy setup, consisting of a Pentax Q7 that I converted to full-spectrum, and an adapted Minolta MC FISH-EYE ROKKOR-OK 1:2.8 f=16mm lens that I modified such that the internal filter changer has several filters suited to Infrared and Ultraviolet photography.

This photo actually features four layers (with an additional yellow layer for 650nm IR). Does this make it a quadrachromy? In any case, this composite was shot handheld.

As usual, I layered the images in post and assigned different color channels to each slice of the spectrum. UV is assigned blue, visible is green, and IR is red.

Sometimes, when the composition changes from frame to frame (a couple seconds are needed to change the filters) the motion is captured and smeared across color channels. I love this psychedelic effect.

All in all, it was a good trip. To those that would endeavor to enjoy Costa Rica,

"Pura Vida!"
